It did not take me long to discover by meandering through the menu on my Laptop and exploring various folders containing files with exotic extensions that by clicking Start>Programs>Accessories you could access MS Paint, cunningly tucked away between the Calculator and Games. In those instances, my attention soon wandered, focusing more on people, curtains and curtain holders, décor, and where there were windows and natural light wondering what lay beyond and trying to discern which of the pot plants were plastic or real than on the discussions or matters at hand. To be honest I really tried very hard to ‘kick the habit’ by not taking pen and notebook to meetings and took my laptop instead with firm resolve to concentrate, take bullet point notes and be a more attention-paying, respectful employee. Worse was when colleagues or people whom I did not know on either side of me, and sometimes opposite me at meetings outside of thie office found my doodling more interesting than the proceedings, conversation or discussion around us and kept breathing comments along the lines of “you’ve missed your vocation” into my ear. I’ve also had little balls of paper thrown at me to get me to pay attention, and with the use of mobile phones pointed text messages asking me to ‘please pay attention’ or ‘you’re being disrespectful.

Later, when I started work, and throughout my career and professional life reactions from my various managers and bosses over the years ranged from studied indifference, admiration for my conscientious and unflinching ‘note taking’ depending on how far I was from them or open castigation accompanied by dagger-like glances at my poor participation and letting down the ‘team’.
